Local Ground Conditions
Northern New York has specific ground conditions that affect how excavation work gets done. Heavy clay soils throughout Jefferson and Lewis counties drain poorly and compact differently than sandy or granular material. The frost line in this area runs 48 to 60 inches deep, which affects foundation depths, drainage installation, and the timing of certain site work. Lake-effect snowpack along Lake Ontario’s eastern shore produces significant seasonal water volume that affects drainage on properties throughout Oswego County and southern Jefferson County.
