New Installations and Resurfacing for Residential and Commercial Properties
G&G Excavation installs new gravel driveways and resurfaces existing ones across Watertown, Jefferson County, and the surrounding region. A driveway that drains well and holds up through Northern New York winters starts with the base. We grade it right, crown it for runoff, and put down stone that is sized for the application.
Most gravel driveways in this area fail for one of three reasons: no base preparation, wrong material, or no crown so water runs to the center instead of off the edge. We build driveways that handle freeze-thaw cycles, heavy vehicles, and years of use without turning into a rutted muddy mess every spring.
New Driveway Installation
A new driveway installation on a rural or residential property typically involves:
Clearing and grubbing
Trees, brush, stumps, and roots in the driveway corridor are removed. Root systems left in the base will decay and cause settlement.
Subgrade excavation
We cut down to firm, stable ground. How deep depends on what we find: topsoil depth, soil type, and whether there is any organic material in the base zone.
Base course
Larger crushed stone or bank run gravel is placed and compacted to form a stable foundation layer. This is where the load-bearing capacity of the driveway comes from.
Grading and crowning
The base is graded with a center crown so water sheds to both sides. Drainage is built into the shape of the driveway, not added as an afterthought.
Surface course
Crushed stone of the appropriate size is placed on top. We discuss material options with you at the estimate stage, including stone size and color.
Culverts
Where the driveway crosses a ditch or drainage channel, a properly sized culvert is installed. Undersized or skipped culverts are the single most common reason driveways wash out.
Driveway Resurfacing
An existing gravel driveway that has lost its stone, developed ruts, or been invaded by potholes does not always need to be rebuilt from scratch. Resurfacing adds a fresh layer of stone and regrading the surface to restore the crown and drainage.
When we come out to estimate a resurfacing job, we assess whether the base is still sound. If the base has deteriorated or if the driveway is sinking in sections, resurfacing alone will not hold. We tell you what we find before you commit to the work.
Frost and Drainage: What Makes Northern New York Driveways Fail
Gravel driveways take a beating every spring from frost heave, snowplowing, and water saturation. A proper build needs the right base depth, stone size, and drainage to keep the driveway stable. We also factor in how the driveway will be used, since heavy trucks or farm equipment require a stronger build.
Commercial Driveways and Access Roads
We install and resurface gravel access roads and parking areas for commercial properties, farms, and industrial sites. Commercial-grade work requires a heavier base and attention to drainage that residential work sometimes skips. We build to the load the site is actually going to see.
Curb Cuts and Town Permits
A new driveway that connects to a town or county road typically requires a curb cut permit from the municipality. We tell you what is needed at the estimate stage and help you navigate the process. This is not optional; an unpermitted curb cut can result in the town requiring you to remove the connection.
