Foundation Excavation Contractor Serving Watertown and Northern New York

Digging Foundations to Local Code and Frost Depth

G&G Excavation digs foundations and footings for new homes, additions, and outbuildings across Jefferson County and the surrounding region. We excavate to the depth, dimensions, and bearing stratum your builder or engineer requires, and we know what the frost line actually demands in the townships we work in. A foundation dug too shallow or set on the wrong soil causes problems years down the road that cost far more to fix than getting the dig right the first time.

We work as a sub on new construction, sequencing with your foundation contractor so the hole is ready when the crew shows up, and as a standalone dig for additions and outbuildings where the rest of the build is already underway.

What Foundation Excavation Involves

A new driveway installation on a rural or residential property typically involves:

Layout and Benchmarks

Before any digging starts, we confirm the building layout against the survey or site plan and set elevation benchmarks. Getting the layout right at this stage avoids a foundation dug in the wrong spot or at the wrong elevation relative to the finished grade.

Footing Excavation

Footings are dug to the width, depth, and bearing stratum the foundation plan calls for. We dig to firm, undisturbed soil. A footing placed on fill or disturbed ground settles, and a settling footing cracks the foundation above it.

Basement and Crawl Space Excavation

Full basements and crawl spaces need a larger, deeper dig than a footing alone. We excavate to the floor elevation specified, leave room for the foundation contractor to form and pour, and manage the spoil pile so it does not interfere with the rest of the site.

Slab-on-Grade Excavation

For slab foundations, we cut and compact the subgrade to the elevation and bearing capacity the slab design requires. A slab poured on unstable or uncompacted ground will crack.

Backfill and Foundation Drainage

Once the foundation is poured and approved, we backfill around it in lifts. This prevents uneven soil pressure on the new foundation walls. If drainage is included, we coordinate around the drain tile or waterproofing prep. That way, the system is properly covered and protected from backfill equipment.

Frost Line Depth in Jefferson County and Northern New York

Foundations here must be dug below the frost line to prevent winter heaving and shifting. In Jefferson County, that usually means at least 48 inches, though some sites require deeper. We dig to the depth required by the permit, local code, and engineer. Clay soils in Jefferson and Lewis counties hold frost longer, so proper depth matters.

Working With Your Builder, Architect, or Engineer

We work from the site plan and foundation drawings provided by your builder, architect, or engineer. If engineered specs or geotechnical requirements apply, we dig to those requirements and coordinate inspection timing. Before any digging, we call Dig Safely New York 811 and coordinate utility locates on every job.

Wet Sites and Dewatering

Some sites hold water due to high water tables, clay-heavy soil, or low-lying ground. We assess this during the site visit and flag any water concerns before work starts. If needed, we plan for dewatering, sump pumping, or better scheduling so the foundation crew works in a dry excavation.

Foundation Excavation vs. Foundation Repair

We dig foundations for new construction and additions. We do not do foundation repair, crack injection, or basement waterproofing on existing homes. If your foundation is cracked, settling, or leaking and you are looking for a repair contractor, that is a different trade than what we do here. If you are not sure which one your project needs, call us and we will point you in the right direction.

Foundation Excavation for Commercial Projects

Commercial foundation digs follow the same principles at a larger scale: footings and foundations for new buildings, additions, and outbuildings dug to the engineer’s specified bearing depth, with the documentation and coordination commercial projects require.
