Septic System Installation in Watertown and Jefferson County, NY

New Systems and Replacements Built to Code

G&G Excavation installs septic systems for new construction and replaces failing systems on existing properties across Jefferson, Lewis, St. Lawrence, Oswego, and Oneida counties. We handle the excavation, the installation, and the coordination with local health departments so you end up with a system that passes inspection and works the way it should.

Most of our septic work falls into one of two categories: new systems on properties breaking ground for the first time, and replacements on homes where the existing system is failing or has reached the end of its useful life. Both start the same way: a site assessment, a permit application to the county health department, and a written estimate before any digging starts.

Signs Your Septic System Needs Replacing

Most homeowners don’t think about their septic until something goes wrong. These are the signs that usually mean it’s time to call:

Slow drains throughout the house that don’t respond to routine clearing

Sewage odors inside the house or near the drain field

Wet or unusually green patches over the drain field or leach bed

Sewage backing up into the lowest fixtures in the house

A steel tank that is more than 20 to 25 years old

Jefferson County has a lot of older housing stock, and many systems in the area still have steel tanks or older distribution boxes. Clay soils common throughout the region can also shorten leach field life considerably compared to sandier ground. If your home was built before 1990 and you have not had the system inspected recently, it is worth a call.

Our Process

What a Septic Installation Involves

From the first call to the final inspection, here is how a typical septic installation runs:

Permit and Site Assessment

Every new septic system in New York State requires a county health department permit before digging begins. We coordinate with the right office, including Jefferson County Public Health or the applicable county agency.
Soil type, lot size, setbacks, water sources, and existing wells all affect where and what type of system can be installed. We review these site conditions during the visit before preparing the estimate.

Excavation and Installation

After permits and Dig Safely New York 811 utility locates are complete, we excavate for the tank, distribution box, and drain field. The work includes setting the tank, connecting lines from the house, laying drain field trenches, placing pipe, stone, and geotextile fabric. We then backfill, rough grade, and restore the disturbed ground. Precast concrete tanks are our default for durability, with Roth plastic tanks used when concrete cannot be set.

Inspection and Sign-Off

Most counties require a health department inspection before the system is covered. We schedule that and make sure it is completed before final backfill. You get a copy of the inspection record for your property file, which matters when you sell the home. This record helps confirm the system was inspected and approved. It also protects future buyers, lenders, and inspectors from questions.

Conventional vs. Alternative Systems

Most residential properties in this area are well suited to a conventional gravity-fed system: tank, distribution box, and leach field. When the site has poor soil percolation, a high water table, or limited space, a raised bed or engineered system may be required.

We install both. If a perc test or soil evaluation indicates that a conventional system will not work on your lot, we discuss the options with you before you commit to anything. Sites near bodies of water in this region may require engineered systems with specific setback requirements. We know the local code and the county processes.

Septic Work for New Construction

If you are breaking ground on a new home or outbuilding in Jefferson County or the surrounding area, septic and well planning typically happen before foundation work starts. We work with builders and architects to sequence the septic installation with the rest of the site work. When we are doing the site prep and the septic, it keeps the scheduling cleaner and reduces the number of machines running through the yard at different times.
